Part 5: Andy's Fight with Cancer: Final Days

Andy loved Disney World! His cousin Jorge invited him to come along with his wife to spent a few days with his family and himself at Disney. Theywent and had a great time. By now Andy was in a lot of pain, and he was still taking chemotherapy. But he was full of hope and good spirit nonetheless. The heat was too intense and was bothering him He could bare breath when he went outside. His oncologist, Dr.Varki, recommended a surgery to strip the pleura from the affected lung, but he said he had to wait until his sister’s wedding on August 7, 1998. He went to her bridal shower and he went to her wedding. For one evening we all forgot hisillness and celebrated with her. He was very happy to be there with all his family there. On August 14, 1998, Andy underwent surgery, and he was in ICU for 2 weeks. The days were terrible! Andy was hooked up to a respirator, but even then he was so good that he managed to gain the caring of the nurses in the ICU unit. Finally came home and was recovering. He then started to retain a lot of water; he was very swollen. We went to Dr. Varki office and she sent him to the hospital to run a few tests.
