About Andy
Part 4: Andy's Fight with Cancer:Problems Ahead

In October 1997 he started coughing a lot. We found out that it was a metastasis in the right lung. That Thanksgiving he was in the hospital, but he was in great spiritnonetheless. He was not about to let the holiday go by without a celebration, so he told me to make a homemade thanksgiving dinner. Heand his wife, Eric and his wife Carol, and Michelle and her boyfriend, his father, and I had our dinner party with turkey and pilgrim ornaments right there in the hospital. Like me, Andy’s special time was Christmas; he sure loved it! He wished it were Christmas all year around. We got our Christmas tree as usual. The family got together for our Christmas Eve dinner and later for our usual New Year’s party; he was dancing and making jokes. He took advantage of every possible holiday. For a while his chemotherapy worked, and he was doing great. But then the cells began to mutate. On May 31, 1998, his 28th birthday the house was full! We threw a big party. His uncle Jorge and his cousin Jorge who live in Texas surprised him by showing up, as did his grandmother’s brother "Tomasito" who lives in New Jersey. He was happy, but sometimes I could feel that he knew it was going to be his last birthday.
